Warm conditions today and with that comes rain. No snow of the forecast until the freeze level drops again on Thursday next week (02/10/25) .

Snowpack Summary
Very strong winds have created small Wind Slab Lee to the NW in the alpine.
+15cm has fallen and this will be amplified in the Lee in the Alpine.
Wet Slab is present in the tree line, as the temps were not cold enough and rain fell at lower elevations.

Winds dropping today, but we will see a return on Thursday with strong winds as the next front arrives and snow forecast for Friday.

There was evidence of substantial rain prior to the 15 cm of new snow on Wed Night.
Rain runnels are present and the snow pack is very wet.
Snowpack testing saw the below results
CTE4 SP @ 60cm on interface between wet melt form and persistent ice layer.
SHE@60cm on Melt forms / Ice interface 
The snowpack is very well bridged ATM. Be careful on steep unsupported terrain.

Very warm conditions and an isothermic snowpack have stabilised the snowpack.
There is still a weak layer at 80cm at the interface of the Grapel and the rain crust.
Make sure you factor this in when out in very steep unsupported terrain.

Wind slab was evident over the weekend on aspects Lee to the west.
+30cm in the alpine on these aspects.
Stay aware of this primary concern in the alpine on unsupported steep terrain
Condition becoming more stable now that the snowpack has had 24-48hr to start mending with the increase in daytime temps.

Wind slab has formed on Lee to the West slopes overnight.
+30cm in evident on these aspect in the alpine.
Stay aweare of this primary concern in the alpine.
Condition will continue to become more dangerous throughout the day with continued snow and strong winds.

The expected +70cm of snow will increase the danger in the Australin Alps.

With the freeze levels above 3000m yesterday, we received 2mm of precipitation.
This froze last night creating a thin rain crust
BUT keep in mind the persistent slab issue at 50cm in the snowpack. On steeper unsupported terrain this may become active.
Weekend testing of the persistent weak layer found moderate sudden planer results (CTM2 SP @52cm on top of ice layer)

New storm from expected in the PM today.
Freeze levels falling to 1600m later tomorrow then down to below 100m over the weekend
We should see some snow Friday night and over the weekend.

The snow over the past few days in wet and adding weight to the snowpack.
Testing shows a buried layer of surface hoar @15cm that gives easy, sudden collapse column results (CTE#SC@15 on Buried V)
Shovel shear results in the moderate range on the persistent weak layer @80cm Sudden Planner

Snowpack Summary
Strong winds from yesterday with 20+cm of new snow has created Wind Slab on slopes Lee to the NW.
This will be moderate in size on Lee to the NW slopes in the Alpine.
We will continue to monitor how this new Wind Slab bond to the melt freeze crust is fell on.
 The persistent weak layer at 80cm is still evident but is not reacting to testing on slopes less than 30 degrees.

Better conditions today but more snow over the weekend period
We should see lowering of the freeze level over the next 24hrs to 1500m so the snow should stay in good condition.

The snowpack is now wet on all aspects and all elevations as the freeze level is above 2300m
Wet slab is now our primary concern on all aspect and elevations on slopes steeper than 30 deg.
Secondary concern is still the persistent week layer at 60-80 cm depending on aspect and elevation.

The new front has arrived and with is rain
We should see lowering of the freeze level over the next 24hrs and the rains should turn to snow.
Expected 20cm+ of new snow over the next few days

Extensive ice on all asepects and all elevations.
This rain crust is 7cm thick, but underneath is low density snow.
Snowpack testing found burried surface hoar @30cm.
This burried surface hoar layer was reactive to moderate taps while performing Column tests and shovel shear tests.
THis buirried Surface hoar is unlikely to create slab avalanche as the entire surface of the snowpack is bridgeed with a thick rain crust.
Be awear that in there is unsupported slopes with triggers this could see avalanches on slopes >30 degrees

Freeze levels will hoover between 1000-2000m range until the next front arrives on the 22nd

25+ of new snow has fallen, and this will be more significant in areas Lee to the West.
Moderate winds this weekend is the only negative, so the backcountry is looking good.
Freeze levels will head back above 2000m today.

Rain has turned to snow with the freeze levels falling late yesterday.
Lee to the west will see Wind Slab from the strong winds yesterday.
Lower elevations there may be wet slab avalanches due to the significant levels of precipitation from Wednesday.

Snow continuing for today with temperatures continuing to fall, so there may be snow below alpine regions.
We will continue to monitor how the new Wind Slab is bonding with the surface crust it fell on.

The pre frontal rain arrived in the middle of the night and has deposited 80mm of rain. 
this has significantly consolidated the snowpack and will create a solid base for the new snow expedted to fall today.

Freeze levels droping to 1200m today and lowering to 800m tomorrow.
Heavier snowfalls exped in the PM tonight.
We will monitor how this bonds to a possible melt freeze crust today.
