Are you interested in teaching recreational avalanche courses?

Please read below for information on becoming an instructor. Avalanche Australia Training (AAT) courses are the national standard for recreational avalanche training. Course curricula, instructor support, and resources for students and instructors, are all developed and provided by Avalanche Australia. Courses are delivered by independent third-party providers who are licensed by Avalanche Australia.
All instructors are required to be members of the Avalanche Australia (AA), the organization representing avalanche professionals in Australia. Instructors must meet the membership requirements of their professional organization. All providers and instructors are required to carry liability insurance coverage.
We often field inquiries on how to become an AAT instructor. Below is some important information.

Requirements
AAT instructors must meet the following minimum requirements:

For teaching: Avalanche Training Level 1; Avalanche Training Level 2; Victim Rescue Training:

  • Successful completion of the Operations Level 1 course or equivalent.
  • Be a member of the AAA, in good standing

Additional requirements for all instructors:
  • New instructors to the program must have shadowed a minimum of 10 ATL courses with an experienced ATL instructor
  • All instructors and providers must have liability insurance
  • All instructors must meet the continuing professional development requirements established by the ATL Training Committee
